Don't think that they are using fair and lovely.The basic colour of the skin of all humans is creamy white.In addition to the pink colour added by the blood vessels under the skin,the presence of certain pigments or colour bases in various proportions makes the skin look fair,brown,yellowish,or dark as the case may be.The black pigment or melanin makes the skin look dark.In sunshine,more melanin is produced so that people in the tropics have darker complexion.This pigmentation helps to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the ultraviolet radation in the sunlight.Even a short holiday in the sun can make your skin tanned or dark.
It is interesting to note that while in india people crave for a fair complexion.Westerners spend hours in the sun trying to get a tan on their skins.
